The Beginning, A Private Residence:
The Wilderness Lodge was built in early 1910’s by a wealthy sportsman as a private residence. The estate included three original stone structures that housed a US Post Office, a Church, and a General Store.

A Commercial Venture Followed:
In the mid-1970’s Steven Apted, owner of Miss Hullings Restaurants, The Cheshire Inn, and the Fox & Hound Pub to name a few notable establishments in St. Louis, bought the property and established Wilderness Lodge Resort. At that time, a number of carefully designed cottages were added to the grounds using native rock and timber that still exist today.

Due to Mr Apted’s conceptual efforts, Wilderness Lodge Resort has been listed on many Top Ten travel destination lists and publications such as “The Best Places to Stay in the US” and other travel book series throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s for rustic luxury surrounded by nature.
